Simultaneous interpretation

The interpreter translates in real time from a booth while the speaker is talking, and the audience listens through headsets. It is the mode for conferences, seminars, multilingual workshops and high-level meetings: the programme runs without losing time.

  • best for: conferences, plenaries, training sessions, events of more than 15 to 20 people;
  • requires: booths, consoles, receivers and a technician;
  • team: usually two interpreters per booth.

Consecutive interpretation

The speaker pauses every few sentences and the interpreter then renders what was said, often with the help of notes. No equipment is needed, but the exchange takes roughly twice as long.

  • best for: interviews, negotiations, bilateral meetings, short press conferences, field missions;
  • advantage: accuracy and a personal feel, with no equipment;
  • limitation: significantly longer meetings.

Whispered interpretation

The interpreter sits next to one or two people and interprets simultaneously in a low voice. It is a practical solution for a few listeners in a meeting held in another language.

The mobile kit, with no booth

For a factory, construction or site visit, the interpreter speaks into a portable transmitter and participants listen through receivers. It is simultaneous interpretation that moves with the group.

In short

  • large audience, packed programme: simultaneous;
  • small group, in-depth discussion: consecutive;
  • one or two listeners: whispered;
  • a group on the move: mobile kit.
